How to Use Antiquing Kits on Furniture

Identify the term "antiquing." Antiquing is simply a process of aging furniture, giving it depth and character.

  • Step (1) : Strip the furniture of its finish. Remove the protective top coat on your furniture either by sanding or stripping. This also applies to painted furniture..

  • Step (2) : Paint the unfinished surface with primer. This will ensure proper adhesion of additional base and top coats. Allow the primer to dry before moving on to Step 4..

  • Step (3) : Apply the antiquing product that came with your antiquing kit. A variety of antiquing kits are available, including Rust, Patina and Crackling. Continue applying the antiquing product until you reach your desired result, allowing each coat to dry between applications.

  • Step (4) : Use the antiquing medium. Antique medium is similar to a varnish or stain and is applied in the same manner, with a paint brush or cloth. It is used to darken or "antique" your furniture.

  • Step (5) : Finish with a protective top coat. Once the final coat of antiquing medium is dry, apply two to three layers of polyurethane or acrylic top coat to protect the finish of your newly antiqued furniture.
